When it comes to outdoor skills, the ability to make a cutting edge tool in the woods out of stone is an indispensable skill. Students will work with closely with experienced stone workers, known as flintknappers, in order to craft a stone knife complete with wooden handle bound together with hide glue and rawhide cordage. Each student will also learn about:
- Primitive stone tool making
- Practice basic flintknapping
- Natural binding & glues
- Basic woodworking techniques
In addition, each student will also be able to stitch together their own deerskin knife sheath for their newly crafted stone knife. This is a very hands-on class that takes focus and dedication to complete. Once finished, students will be shown how to take care of their new knife as well as how to use it safely and effectively for use in future outdoor projects and skills.
