This page provides your family with important information about preparing your child for camp. We know it’s long, but please read it thoroughly to ensure your camper gets the best experience at camp.

Directions to Camp:

When you’re driving on Grove Blvd towards Roy Guerrero Park you will drive down a long hill as you enter the park, as you get to the bottom of this hill be prepared to turn right. After this right you will follow this road down and take your first right once more. Here you will find yourself at the Park Plaza Parking Lot. Park in a space and walk towards the camp staff and volunteers to check in and drop off your camper.

 

At camp sign in, you will be checked in by your camper’s counselor at the sign in table. Here you will be required to show you have all the items needed for camp. We will also verify your information and any authorized pickups for you and your family.

 

PLEASE respect all posted park speed limits and traffic signs.

Camp Hours:

9:00AM – 3:30PM  Monday – Friday

Drop Off:

Monday through Friday, please arrive to drop off between 8:50 and 9:10pm. We need all campers at camp for the day by 9:50am or else we will consider them absent for the day. If you give us a call letting us know you’re arriving later we can do our best to accommodate. Please arrive a little early on Monday only for registration and sign-in.

Pick Up:

Monday through Friday, please arrive to pick-up and sign-out between 3:30pm and 3:40pm. All campers must be signed-out by 3:50pm. If you plan on picking up early please be aware we are often back at pick up area by 3pm for Journal and Circle Time together for camp. However picking up before then can be very difficult for both you and our staff as we are often in the wilderness areas of the 300 acre property which could be at our archery range, along the river and so forth, so please make sure to check in about picking up early as taking the day off of camp may be more fitting.

No Early Arrival/Late Pickup:

Although our staff is on-site both before and after sign-in and sign-out, they are NOT available to supervise children outside of the arrival and pick-up times indicated above. This time is used for program planning and debrief, and it is critical to us being able to provide each individual camper and the group with the best week possible. We know that this is challenging for working parents and appreciate your understanding.

Late Pick Up Fees:

Additional fees will be charged to parents who are more than 20 minutes late to pick-up at a rate of $1 per minute. Parents who are 15 minutes late will be given one verbal warning before being charged. Parents that are more than 20 minutes late will be charged without a warning.

Sign In & Sign Out:

It is our policy that each camper be signed-in every morning and signed-out every afternoon by an adult. Please make sure that you park your vehicle in a designated parking space and not along the curbs or sidewalks. We have been having alot of campers get “dropped off” by simply pulling up and getting out and walking up to camp while the parents drive off. Or families, parking alongside the curb and signing in. This creates a big long line of cars that then cannot enter or exit the parking lot and drop off area. We understand you may be in a rush, but please be sure to help us each day by signing in and out in person. ​

 

What Your Child Should Wear:

  • Comfortable clothes that can get very dirty and are appropriate for the weather.
  • Earth tone clothing is best for all our camps – Browns, Tans, Greens, Greys
  • Sturdy closed toe shoes that can get wet and dirty – NO CROCS, NO FLIP FLOPS
  • Rain gear or poncho if significant rain is in the forecast for camp
  • Large sunhat for bright and hot days

What to Pack in your Child’s Backpack:

Please send the following items in a backpack that has two shoulder straps. They will need to carry their pack throughout the day.

  • Packed lunch
  • Mid-morning/afternoon snacks
  • FULL 26 oz to 32 oz (or larger) water bottle is REQUIRED each day for camp
    • ​In the heat of summer, it is critical that your child drink plenty of water. If your child does not bring a water bottle they will not be able to attend camp until they have one. Thank you for your cooperation for safety.
    • Please do not send disposable water bottles with your camper to camp. We value reusable and refillable water bottles.
  • Personal supply of sunscreen
    • Please apply your child’s sunscreen at drop off if needed. While our instructors will do their best to monitor and remind campers about re-application at the River, it is very helpful if campers of a reasonable age are able to monitor and help themselves.
  • Bug Spray
    • ​We highly recommend that you put bug spray on your children before camp. Chiggers are present at Roy Guerrero during the warmer months. Don’t forget to put bug spray around their ankles/socks and around their waist under their shirt to help prevent chigger bites as well as on top of their clothing. Natural bug sprays do not seem to work well on chiggers. Having your child take a shower after camp is also a very good idea. Here is a link to a helpful article about chiggers.
  • Camp Knife – Mora Craftline Basic w/ Sheath (3.6 in blade) – For campers ages 7 to 12 only
    • ​If you purchase a knife during registration it will be given to your child at camp.
    • If you chose to purchase a knife on your own, please be sure to send it with your child each day of camp.
  • Journal & color pencils
    • A simple blank or lined notebook of medium size (5.5in x 8.5in) is great.
    • A simple pack of 12 Color pencils helps us record in our journal what camp is all about each day.
    • Large gallon size bag to place notebook & color pencils in – just in case of rainy weather and the backpack gets wet

What NOT to Pack:

  • Electronic devices, games, and screen based gadgets (Mobile phones may be carried turned off inside a ziploc bag inside the pack, but are not to be used during camp.)
  • Excess extra clothes – an extra layer / rain gear is fine if necessary but please do not pack a change of clothes for after camp in their backpack. We do not allow campers to change while at camp and this adds extra weight and bulk that tires kids out. Keep these (or a blanket or towel for your muddy child to sit on) in your car and change after camp is over.
  • Extra weight. We will be hiking each day, and heavy backpacks become a challenge for all. Bring only what you need.
  • Toys & Stuffed animals, trading cards or anything else. These items in the past have been lost, gotten wet, dirty, destroyed or forgotten and we hate to see kids lose their items when they didn’t need to. If you have something you like to share with other campers. Please make time for this after camp is over.

What to Expect at Nature Camp

Monday Morning:

The camp director of your child’s camp will greet you at the camp sign-in table. Please keep your child with you until after all stages of sign in have been completed. At that point your child will be given a camp t-shirt and a name tag, and then invited to join the rest of the group in a game or explore our hands-on nature museum. This is a good time to check in with the camp director if you have any questions or concerns. The camp director can pass along any important information to your child’s instructor once the initial arrival phase has passed.

Daily Schedule:

Each morning there will be an active nature themed game that campers can join as they arrive. We will also have a crafting area as well as a nature museum set out for those who prefer a quieter or more stationary activity to start off their day. This is followed by one of the staff sharing a story that introduces a general theme or focus for the day. After the story, campers join their small groups we call “clans” for the majority of the day exploring the park together and participating in camp activities, challenges and projects.

Nature Immersion:

Because our camps are always outside, students tend to get wet, dirty, muddy and may have the occasional frog in their pocket. For these reasons we always encourage parents to be prepared for the messes. Bringing a towel, a change of clothes as well as shoes, bags to put dirty clothes and shoes in and maybe some more towels for the seats just in case. Don’t forget to bring a cricket for that hungry frog also.

Groupings:

At nature camp, students are placed into small groups called clans. If you requested that your child be placed with a friend during registration, we do our best to honor that request but sometimes we are not able to meet every request. Requests for students of significantly different ages to be grouped together will not be accommodated. Typically clan groups are not finalized until mid morning on Monday of camp.

Nature Mentoring and Connection:

We use children’s natural passions in order to perform our natural flow style of teaching called Nature Mentoring. Our goal is not only to teach kids about nature but more importantly to help them develop better relationships with the earth, their friends, and themselves, all while having wild fun outdoors learning earth-based skills and crafts.
